About this disease

What it concerns

The kneecap is an important part of the extensor apparatus of the leg. However, due to its advanced and exposed position a fracture of the kneecap often may occur, especially when falling on the bent knee. The complexity and progression of the fracture are important. There are simple and multifragmental, vertical and horizontal fractures. In the case of simple vertical fractures, there is a chance that the bone has not been pulled apart by the muscles and therefore the fracture is not out of alignment.

Symptoms and consequences

In a displaced fracture, the extensor apparatus of the leg is blocked and extension of the knee joint is no longer possible.

How we can help you

Examination and diagnosis

At Männedorf Hospital, an experienced emergency team is available around the clock, as well as the necessary diagnostic equipment to enable rapid and adequate treatment.

Treatment

It is possible to treat undisplaced patellar fractures without surgery, however, this requires immobilization of the knee joint for six weeks. If treatment without surgery is possible, experienced physicians and physical therapists are available to provide good pain management and rapid mobilization. Displaced fractures, on the other hand, should be treated surgically. Close cooperation with our acute geriatrics department allows comprehensive care for elderly patients.
