From the cradle to the emergency ward - thank you Beat Frank!

After almost eleven years of dedicated and influential work on the emergency ward, our medical co-head and staff physician, Dr. Beat Frank, is leaving our hospital. He is taking up the new challenge of becoming Head of Internal Medicine at Uri Cantonal Hospital in May 2026.

Over the past eleven years, he has played a key role in shaping the development of our emergency ward, both professionally and personally - from structural improvements to interdisciplinary cooperation and continuous quality development in patient care.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank him warmly for his many years of service and to bid him farewell in person with a short interview.

Your journey at Männedorf Hospital began very early on and not in a professional sense - what is your connection to Männedorf Hospital?

I am a "Seebueb", born in Männedorf Hospital and grew up on the right bank of Lake Zurich. This meant that I was always somehow connected to Männedorf Hospital and it made sense to take my first medical steps here too.

You spent your Häfeli internship, your years as a junior doctor and as a junior doctor here at Männedorf Hospital. What prompted you to return as Co-Head of the emergency ward in 2015?

My return after several years as a senior consultant at Triemli Hospital was prompted by a phone call from Anouk Chuffart - who had previously been my senior consultant: "The co-head position in the emergency department is becoming vacant, muesch cho!". I followed this call and have not regretted it.

When you think about the eleven years you spent with us on the emergency ward, which moments or experiences were particularly formative for you?

The new emergency ward opened pretty much exactly when I returned. Working in this new, modern infrastructure was great, especially if you knew the emergency ward beforehand.

The COVID period was also formative. There was a lot of uncertainty about what to expect. At the same time, a lot of flexibility was required so that we could adapt to the constantly changing situations and challenges (test centers, vaccinations, containers). As a member of the task force, I also learned a lot about the complex workings of a hospital during this time.

What developments or changes in the emergency department are you particularly proud of?

I believe we have continuously developed the emergency ward as a whole. We have been quite successful in adapting to the constantly growing number of patients, although we are constantly reaching the limits of the available space. I would particularly like to highlight the certification as a training center for emergency medicine by our professional association SGNOR. We received a very positive assessment in the audit, which is a nice recognition of our work.

What did you particularly like about working with the referring doctors?

Unfortunately, the opportunities to meet in person became fewer and fewer over the years. Nevertheless, we still know each other and a relationship of trust has developed over the years. I always enjoyed the personal and telephone contact because we were able to solve so many problems in an uncomplicated way. I particularly appreciated the always friendly tone.

Is there anything you would like to pass on to our referrers?

Of course, I hope that you will continue to remain loyal to "my" SMA. It is a small but excellent hospital that offers sensible, high-quality medicine for the region.

In conclusion: What do you personally take away from this time for your future career?

Our emergency team has been very stable over the years. I believe that this makes a decisive contribution to good performance and that you have to look after your employees accordingly. I also learned that it is possible to manage such a department on a job-sharing basis - provided you have a job-sharing partner like I had. Anouk Chuffart and I complemented each other perfectly and I will miss this collaboration very much.

Dear Beat, we would like to thank you very much for your great commitment, your professional expertise and your consistently collegial cooperation. We wish you all the best for the future, both professionally and privately, and continued success!
