Impressions of our postpartum ward
You and your unborn child are in the best hands with us
Birthing suite
On admission to the birthing suite you will undergo a normal routine check. The Cardiotocograph (CTG) which records your baby’s heartbeat and any contractions, will be strapped to your abdomen. A vaginal examination to assess the cervix and define which stage of labor you are at will also take place. Bloods may be taken at this stage and a Venflon for intravenous access will also be inserted.
Birthing rooms
Our birthing suite is staffed around the clock with a midwife and doctor. We have two birthing rooms, one with a large bath for water births. The third room is the examination room for routine check-ups but can also be used as a third birthing room if necessary. Our fourth room is for induction of labor where your partner can also stay with you.
Pain relief
During labor we have natural therapies such as oils, aromatherapy, acupuncture, massage and breathing techniques available to you as well as Entonox, (laughing gas), and intravenous analgesia.
Examination of the Newborn
An on-call pediatrician supports us in the care of all our newborn. Before you leave the hospital, your baby will undergo a comprehensive examination by our pediatrician. Prior to discharge the Newborn Screening blood test, bilirubin (jaundice) check and hearing test will be undertaken. When necessary the hip scan will also take place.
Holistic care for mother and baby
Generally, on the postnatal ward, the mother and baby are fit and well. Our maternity ward team consists of Doctors, Midwives, Lactation Consultants, Nurses and Students.
A named nurse will be responsible for your care throughout your stay, although you will meet and be cared for by other members of our friendly and efficient team.
