About this disease

What it is about

Behind a pleural effusion can be banal causes such as a viral infection or very serious diseases such as severe heart failure or lung cancer. Depending on the causes, one can wait or perform a puncture of the effusion.

Types

Basically, the protein-poor transudate pleural effusion can be distinguished from the protein-rich exudate pleural effusion. While transudate can often be treated with tablets, in the case of exudate the cause of the effusion must always be found.

Symptoms and consequences

The pleural effusion may result in shortness of breath or general poor performance, depending on its size and cause. If the effusion is malignant, pain may also be present when it occurs.

What we do for you

Examination and diagnosis

Today, a pleural effusion is usually detected by ultrasound or computer tomography. A detailed discussion with the doctor can often provide clues as to the cause of the effusion. If it is unclear where the effusion originates, a sample can be taken by single puncture to clarify the situation.

Treatment

Treatment must be adjusted depending on the cause. In the case of pleural effusion due to cardiac insufficiency, it is usually sufficient to adjust the medication. In the case of malignant effusions, multiple punctures or a permanent drain - a so-called PleurX catheter - must usually be inserted. In complicated cases, we work together with specialists in thoracic surgery.
